Last Saturday, the Hendersonville High School Lady Commandos Softball team hosted a successful first annual Sweetheart 5K for the community. A portion of the proceeds raised from the event Saturday morning will benefit the HHS Special Olympics team in the spring.
Jeff Serbin, head coach of the Lady Commandos, said when they first thought of the idea to host the run, they knew they wanted to provide something fun for the community. “We’re always looking for fun ways for our team to fundraise and this seemed like the perfect way to do just that.”
“This is a great opportunity for our team to not only help out the Special Olympics students at our school, but also to provide the community with a fun way to celebrate the day after Valentine’s Day,” said Serbin. “Since there isn’t currently another type of run like this offered in our area, we thought it would be fun to start one of our own that the team can continue as a tradition for the years to come.”
Awards were also presented to various participants of the run Saturday morning. The award for ‘Top Male’ runner went to Andrew Towle with a time of 21:05. ‘Top Female’ runner was presented to HHS Softball team member, Emily Mays, with a 29:23 time. The award for ‘Fastest Couple’ went to Nate and Sara Towne.
